PERSONAL DATA, CAREER AND PRINCIPAL RESEARCH INTERESTS
Dubravka Milanov was born on 31 May 1963 in Vrbas, Republic of Serbia.
She received her degree from the Department of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Belgrade’s Faculty of Veterinary Medicine. She had a 9.32 GPA.
From 1995 to 2000, she worked at the Department of Virology and Immunology of the Scientific Veterinary Institute “Novi Sad”. Dubravka completed her postgraduate studies in microbiology and immunology, and on 22 June 2000, at the Department of Microbiology and Immunology of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine in Belgrade, she successfully defended her Magister Thesis “Detection of the virus of classical swine fever by direct immunofluorescence and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) tests in experimentally infected pigs.” Dr Ružica Ašanin was mentor Professor.
Dr Milanov worked in the Clinical Bacteriology, Mycology, and Parasitology Department of the Scientific Veterinary Institute “Novi Sad” in Novi Sad from 2000 to 2014. Her expertise and research focused on the study of uncommon agents which cause mastitis in dairy cattle. In the Republic of Serbia, she was the first to report on the discovery of the achlorophyllous alga Prototheca zopfii in milk from cows with mastitis. In her technical solution, “Programme for the Control of Mastitis Caused by the Alga Prototheca zopfii in the Republic of Serbia” (M82), she provided a precise technique for its laboratory isolation and identification.
She was involved in the creation of diagnostic guidelines for the detection of certain other, lesser-known mastitis pathogens (Corynebacterium ulcerans and Corynebacterium pseudotuberculosis) in collaboration with human microbiologists. She was the first veterinarian in Serbia to do ground-breaking research on the biofilms created by bacteria, including Listeria monocytogenes, a foodborne pathogen.
Dubravka Milanov successfully defended her doctoral dissertation “Research into the Influence of Some Environmental Factors on the Ability of Different Strains of Listeria Monocytogenes to Produce Biofilm” on 29 December 2008, at the Department of Microbiology and Immunology of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine in Belgrade. Dr Ružica Ašanin was mentor Professor.
Dr Milanov expanded her study of biofilms to include other food borne pathogens, such as Escherichia coli and different serovars of the Salmonella species, as well as the germs that cause dairy cows to repeatedly develop chronic udder infections (Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Klebsiella pneumoniae). She started the Laboratory for microbiology examination of animal feed at the Scientific Veterinary Institute “Novi Sad” in 2014 and has been running it ever since. She has been the Head of the Department for Food Safety, Toxicology and Drug Analysis since 2018.

Dubravka Milanov participated in 18 research projects as a researcher.
She authored more than 250 papers in academic and professional journals.
Dr Milanov was the Project coordinator of the two research projects:
Project No. ТР 31071, sponsored by the Ministry of Education, Science and Technological Development of the Republic of Serbia was titled “Research into the pharmacological properties of antimicrobial agents, the implementation of novel technological solutions, and alternative methods of prophylaxis aimed to improve the control of infectious diseases of domestic animals.” (2013-2019).
In 2014, research project titled “Study on resistance mechanisms of Escherichia coli and Salmonella spp. to antibiotics” that was of particular significance for the sustainability of development in the Autonomous Province of Vojvodina. The Provincial Secretariat for Science and Technological Development of the Autonomous Province of Vojvodina provided funding for the study.
