Scientific field: biotechnical sciences – food engineering, quality and safety of food and feed, environmental engineering
Areas of expertise: toxic residue analysis, radiochemistry, ecotoxicology
Main research interests:
Environmental protection with an emphasis on the quality and safety of food of animal origin and animal feed. Determining the nutritional value of foods of animal origin and animal feed, as well as examining the level of contamination of animal feed and animal foods with toxic elements and radionuclides. Determining the basic parameters of radiation safety in biotechnology, as well as studying the translocation and accumulation of the mentioned pollutants in certain links of the food chain.
Main daily and research activities:
Determination of the level of micro and macro elements as well as residues of toxic elements by modern analytical methods (UV/VIS spectrophotometry, emission flame photometry (EPF), atomic absorption spectrometry (AAS), inductively coupled plasma with mass detection (ICP/MS), beta radiation detection, gamma-spectrometry) in different food and feed samples. Examination of the nutritional properties of food and animal feed as well as the availability of various mineral elements with the aim of preventing mineral deficits and imbalances in the body. Monitoring of biosphere load with radioactive pollutants by measuring parameters of natural and produced radioactivity: total beta activity, activities of 40K, 235U, 238U, 232Th, 226Ra, 7Be, 87Rb as well as monitoring of the activity of produced radionuclides 137Cs and 90Sr. Tests of the concentration of toxic elements and the level of radioactivity are carried out on various samples from the environment (milk, meat, fish, honey, cereals, soil). Based on the above measurements, the translocation and accumulation of the mentioned polluting substances in certain organs and parts of the biosphere is monitored.
Research on the role of selenium in biochemical processes related to antioxidant protection, which have not yet been sufficiently studied, is particularly noteworthy. Also, the selenium needs of certain species of domestic animals, including humans, have not been reliably defined and there is no general agreement on this. Using modern analytical methods, the distribution of selenium in tissues and organs is studied, which enables a better knowledge of the distribution of this important metalloid in the body of domestic animals, as well as determining the optimal and tolerant concentration of selenium in food.
